Kalokol Naremiet Beach Management Unit (BMU) was registered on March 8, 2011, in Kenya under the Fisheries Act 378. The group’s purpose is to alleviate poverty, improve members’ market access, social and economic stability, transportation, and storage capabilities, and create employment opportunities for the members. The BMU, located in Kalokol, 55 kilometres from Lodwar town, is owned by 190 members, 115 female and 75 male.
Naremiet BMU ventured into dry fish business but lacked fish drying racks and a storage facility which saw them dry fish directly on sand along the beach after landing them. This seriously compromised the quality of their fish as they dried with sand particles stuck on them and were stored under unhygienic conditionsin the fishermen homes since they lacked a store. Because of the low quality of their fish, they had a challenge getting better markets and sold at very low prices and some were not sold making them incur huge losses and wastage. Customers complained that they chewed sand particles whenever they eat their fish.
